One of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterbacks is dealing with an injury ahead of their regular season opener.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback room may be a bit shorthanded for their regular season opener against the New York Jets on Sunday.
Quarterback Skylar Thompson popped up on the Steelers’ final injury report with a hamstring injury and has questionable game status heading into Week 1. Thompson had been a full participant in every other practice during the week.
Pittsburgh may just be acting with caution with a long season ahead, but it will certainly be an injury to monitor.
The Steelers are already without sixth-round rookie quarterback Will Howard for at least the first four games since he was placed on injured reserve as he continues to recover from a broken pinky finger on his right, throwing hand.
That leaves just 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers and veteran Mason Rudolph as the only healthy quarterbacks remaining on the roster. Of course, both would have to go down for Pittsburgh to need Thompson, but it doesn’t seem like the team is trying to test its luck.
Thompson signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers in January with many believing he would eventually be the odd man out in the room. However, he earned himself a spot on the roster after putting together a very impressive preseason.
In fact, Thompson finished the preseason as the NFL’s best passer. Over three games, he completed 41 of 56 passes (73.2%) for 498 yards (8.89 yards per attempt), four touchdowns, one interception, and a league-best 116.5 passer rating.
The 28-year-old began his NFL career as a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and spot started for injured quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater at times.
Thompson has thrown for 721 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in 10 career games.
