Behind the Steel Curtain
The Pittsburgh Steelers had their worst offensive performance of the season last Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The offense’s only touchdown of the night came when the game was already well out of reach, on a 27-yard reception by Roman Wilson. It was apparent on Sunday as much as ever that the Steelers need more help from their pass catchers, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers seems to think the solution could be in the tight end room.
Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth signed a four-year, $48.4 million dollar contract in 2024, but 2025 has marked one of his slowest starts to a season in his career. The tight end has only 260 yards receiving through nine games.
When Rodgers spoke to the media on Wednesday, he spoke glowingly of the veteran tight end.
“Pat’s a really smart player and we have to continue to find ways to get him on the field,” Rodgers said. “You know, Darnell’s been a big part of our success you know but we gotta get Pat some more opportunities too and maybe both of them out there at the same time.”
Rodgers is making it known that he would like to get his tight end the ball more. Freiermuth had his best game of the season so far during Pittsburgh’s first matchup against the Bengals, in which he totaled 111 yards on five catches along with a pair of scores. The tight end has averaged 66 yards per game and has six touchdowns against the Bengals in his career.
Freiermuth and the Steelers offense will have a chance to get back on track this weekend against the league’s 30th-ranked passing defense and avenge their Thursday Night Football loss from just three weeks ago.
