Aaron Rodgers isn’t in his prime anymore. That’s the bad news regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 42-year-old quarterback.
The good news? He can still sling the football with the best of them.
Rodgers threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions a season ago. Former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. remains impressed with the four-time Associated Press NFL MVP.
“Aaron Rodgers can still throw the football,” Smith said Friday. “I don’t think Aaron Rodgers — and he would say this, too — he’s not the Aaron Rodgers that we know took over in Green Bay. Young A-Rod, that’s not who he is. However, he still can put the ball in places young quarterbacks can’t. He has the ability to understand what’s going on.
“He knows it, he sees it, there’s no defense he’s not seen before. People can throw different things at him and maybe he’ll hesitate, but it only takes him a little bit of time to figure it out, bang and he throws.”
Rodgers’ arm talent was on full display during minicamp last month, when he launched a 70-yard deep ball that fell into Roman Wilson’s hands in stride. The wideout described it as “just a beautiful ball” shortly afterward.
“He’s gonna give you two or three ‘hell of a’ throws that you say, ‘How old is he?'” Smith said. “The arm has always been there. … Now he can’t outrun a chipmunk or a snail, but he can throw the hell (out) of a football.”
