The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed strong safety DeShon Elliott on the injured reserve list, the team announced on Friday.
Elliott suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers. It was initially reported that Elliott could miss the entire 2025 season with the injury, though head coach Mike Tomlin said on Tuesday that he merely suffered a hyperextended knee and was considered week to week.
Now having been placed on injured reserve, Elliott must miss at least four weeks, and is eligible to be reinstated as early as the Steelers’ Week 13 game against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 30, though he is expected to be out longer than that.
Elliott had been one of the lone bright spots for a beleaguered Steelers secondary this year. In five games, he has 38 tackles, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits, two passes defended, a forced fumble and an interception.
The Steelers traded for veteran safety Kyle Dugger this week to help replace Elliott. He, Jabrill Peppers and Chuck Clark are expected to help replace Elliott while he’s out.
“We had other guys that (were) trying to play a lot of positions that they really haven’t had a lot of reps in practice. Because DeShon’s always out there, he’s working,” fellow Steelers safety Juan Thornhill said after their team’s 35-25 loss to the Packers. “He goes down and it’s like, ‘Oh, so what are we gonna do now?’”
In addition to Elliott, the team also placed defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale on the injured reserve list. The team did not make any another corresponding transactions and now has two vacant slots on its 53-man active roster.
