Steelers Projected to Take ‘Major Fall’ in 2025
Steelers Now Steelers Now

Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports recently revealed his annual five teams poised to take a major fall in 2025, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are once again on the list. With how the Steelers’ 2024 season ended, it’s hard to blame Kerr for his prediction.

“Every year the Steelers seem to make this list, and every year they find a way to have a winning season. Counting out a Mike Tomlin team is a bad idea, but the Steelers were one of the worst teams in the league to close out the 2024 season (and they made the playoffs),” Kerr wrote.

“The Steelers were the first 10-win team in NFL history to end the season on a losing streak of 5+ games, which includes the wild-card playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens. They averaged 14.2 points per game and allowed 24.7 over the last five games, as Pittsburgh couldn’t find a way to score points consistently. Four of those five games were against 10+ win teams and the Steelers were outscored by 64 points in those games.”

The Steelers would like to sign one of their two incumbent quarterbacks to a long-term contract this offseason, president Art Rooney II said during his annual press conference with local beat writers.

Rooney said that he think it’s unlikely that the Steelers will sign both of them, and that his preference would be for more than the one-year deal both players played under in 2024.

Neither Russell Wilson or Justin Fields really move the needle in a loaded conference at the quarterback position. Two of the leagues top quarterbacks — Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson — are in the AFC North, as well.

“Whether it’s Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, the Steelers don’t have a consistent answer at quarterback,” kerr wrote. “They also have issues at wide receiver and inconsistent play on the offensive line. The Steelers need to alter the offense and hope it doesn’t stall in December like it did in 2024.

“The AFC North is a good division and the Steelers have plenty of issues to fix. They still may finish with a winning record anyway, but a tailspin has to be coming at some point.”

Pro Football Network is also down on the Steelers’ chances for a successful season in 2025.

Using 10,000 runs of the PFN Playoff Predictor simulations, the PFN crew projected the entire 2025 season for each team, and came up with a bleak outcome for the Steelers.

The PFN model currently projects that the Steelers will finish the 2025 season 6-11, securing Mike Tomlin’s first losing season as head coach and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022. With significant roster uncertainty at the quarterback position, it’s fair to say that’s a prediction that lacks much confidence at this point.
