With Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith, Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward, the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have room for Kevin Foelsch. Foelsch, a former Division II tight end, was released along with 10 others on Friday as Mike Tomlin’s team trims its roster ahead of cut-down day.

This isn’t the first time Foelsch, 24, has been cut by the Steelers during the lead-up to the regular season. He signed with the team after undrafted rookie DJ Thomas-Jones was injured in training camp, then was dropped when Thomas-Jones returned and the team needed to add depth at cornerback. After cutting ties with Thomas-Jones, the Steelers brought Foelsch back for a second stint.

Foelsch played collegiately at New Haven and has spent time with five teams, including the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 250 pounds, he snagged 32 passes for 318 yards and a touchdown as a senior in 2023.

The Steelers are set at Foelsch’s position, as the team’s leading returning receiver is Freiermuth, who caught 65 passes for 653 yards and seven touchdowns a season ago. General manager Omar Khan added Smith in the trade that also brought Jalen Ramsey to the Steel City in June.

Smith posted career-highs with 88 grabs, 884 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches with the Miami Dolphins last season. He’s familiar with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who he previously played under with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

Washington, who has the build to be an offensive tackle, is another viable target for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
