DETROIT — Dylan Cook will get an encore. The Pittsburgh Steelers tackle, who made his first career start last week against the Miami Dolphins in what was somewhat of an emergency situation, but he played well enough to get another shot.
While head coach Mike Tomlin cautioned that he isn’t making any big-picture projections, Cook will make his second straight start at left tackle against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
“I don’t know if I’m ready to anoint anybody for the rest of the season,” Tomlin said to Steelers.com on Sunday. “That’s just the urgency in which we’re living right now. It’s week-in and week-out. And certainly he did enough, and I’m thankful for his contributions in the construction of victory on Monday night. He’ll start and play this weekend, and we’ll see where it leads us.”
Cook will start despite the fact that Andrus Peat is active for the Steelers against the Lions on Sunday. Peat suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14, with Cook coming in mid-game to replace him in Baltimore and then making his first career start against the Miami Dolphins.
Against Miami, Cook didn’t allow a single pressure against Dolphins veteran Bradley Chubb. He’ll get another experienced test against Marcus Davenport in Detroit.
Cook first joined the Steelers in May 2023 after spending his first pro season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An undrafted free agent out of Montana, Cook waited a long time to make his Pittsburgh debut, bouncing between the active roster and the practice squad over the 2023 and 2024 season before making his NFL debut on Dec. 7.
With starter Broderick Jones and swing backup Calvin Anderson both out of long-term, Cook will have a significant opportunity down the stretch if he can keep up his strong play.
