Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith was fined $12,172 by the NFL for tripping quarterback Jared Goff late in Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions.
The Steelers were without two of their top three outside linebackers last Sunday. Nick Herbig and All-Pro T.J. Watt (lung) were both inactive. That makes Sunday’s standout performance against the run even more impressive.
Jack Sawyer and Highsmith stepped up in Watt and Herbig’s absence, as the Lions were held to only 15 yards rushing. Highsmith had six total tackles (4 solos), two tackles for losses and two quarterback hits, while Sawyer had five total tackles (3 solos), one tackle for loss, one pass defended and two quarterback hits.
Highsmith had the game-sealing sack on Lamar Jackson in the Steelers’ Week 14 critical AFC North win over the Baltimore Ravens. When healthy this season, Highsmith has been terrific.
It was a banner day for Highsmith in Baltimore. In addition to the game-sealing sack, the veteran OLB recorded seven tackles (all solos), three tackles for loss and two QB hits.
Steelers rookie defensive tackle Yahya Black was also fined $5,194 by the NFL for an “obscene gesture” during Sunday’s win over the Lions.
For some reason, Black flipped off the Lions’ sideline after a play in the first quarter. It was probably targeted at a specific player.
