The Pittsburgh Steelers have one of the NFL’s largest offensive players on their payroll, and they finally used him as a receiver in Week 2.
Tight end Darnell Washington is listed as 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds, but both of those numbers feel low when standing next to the gentle giant from Georgia. His play, though, is anything but gentle, as No. 80 has solidified himself was one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL. However, fans have begged for him to be utilized in the passing game since he was drafted. The man they call “Mt. Washington” caught a two-point conversion pass from Aaron Rodgers following a DK Metcalf touchdown in Week 2, and offensive coordinator was asked about the usage of Washington in the red zone.
“Just throw it to Shaq in the post and see what he does,” Smith said via Alan Saunders. “We’ve got to do a better job of taking advantage of (1 on 1 opportunities) and that starts with me.”
Washington caught a touchdown in Week 2 of last season against the Denver Broncos, which prompted many to think we would see much more of that inside the 10-yard line. However, that has yet to materialize.
