There’s no doubt about it. Aaron Rodgers will be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback this season. After that, though? It’s unclear. The Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer has a possible successor lined up for the future Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Iyer believes Indianapolis Colts signal-caller Anthony Richardson would be a good reclamation project for Mike Tomlin’s team next year. Richardson was named Daniel Jones’ backup on Tuesday.
“The Steelers know they’ll be getting only one season of starting from Aaron Rodgers,” Iyer wrote. “Between Texas’ Arch Manning (maybe), Clemson’s Cade Klubnik, LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier and others, the 2026 QB draft class lines up to be a strong replacement route. But they might want to take a flyer on Richardson, given his combination of athleticism and arm strength can fit well and develop in Arthur Smith’s offense.
“With a deep threat such as DK Metcalf in the mix and a strong reemphasis on the power running game, Richardson has a potentially good environment in which to rebound.”
Iyer listed the New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets as other potential landing spots for the former No. 4 overall draft pick. Richardson went 8-7 in his 15 starts for the Colts, passing for 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Richardson fell out of favor with Shane Steichen’s team last season, being benched for two games after checking himself out for a play because he was worn down. He reaggravated an AC joint injury and missed the Colts’ OTAs and minicamp this offseason. He also dislocated his pinky in the team’s preseason opener.
