As veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers prepares for what could be his final season in the NFL, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the veteran QB’s approach in the early stages of training camp. In offseason moves characterized as “last swing” efforts, the Steelers find a silver lining in signing Rodgers. Adding another veteran to an experienced roster, Aaron exemplified why he’s been in the NFL for over a decade.
Tomlin had one word to best describe Rodgers’ work ethic, per ESPN’s Brook Pryor.
“He’s a workaholic,” Tomlin said. “I don’t have a whole lot of reservations about that.”
The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback and 2010 Super Bowl champion is only four years removed from winning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award, which was the fourth of his career. After two underwhelming seasons with the New York Jets, Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.6 million deal, which could be worth up to $19.5 million, with the Steelers. While some are anticipating a lackluster season, many are calling the Steelers Super Bowl contenders.
The Steelers undoubtedly aged in their moves this summer. However, there is a silver lining to a blockbuster offseason, which included trading for Jaguars cornerback Jack Ramsey and, of course, the Steelers signing Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 before the end of the calendar year. There was an interesting take on the offseason moves, per ESPN’s Seth Walder.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has plenty to look forward to. Hinting at what will most likely be a promising roster amid a rebuilding season, the Steelers have the draft capital to bounce back and make a potential run to the Super Bowl in 2026, Walder explains.
“Pittsburgh’s entire offseason has resulted in an old team trying to take one last swing,” Walder wrote. “It probably won’t work, and next year will be the time for a true rebuild. If so, one piece of good news: the Steelers’ offseason resulted in projected compensatory picks in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, per OverTheCap.com.”
Walder graded the Steelers a C for their offseason moves, pointing that Rodgers’ leading at quarterback will be disappointing in the end. Beyond DK Metcalf, the Steelers lack high-end receivers for Rodgers to throw to at this stage of his career. If the defense remains steady throughout the 2025 NFL season, it has a chance to be successful. Either way, Steelers fans will have an idea of which direction their team is heading by mid-season.
