The Pittsburgh Steelers might not see Joe Burrow this season. The Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback suffered a foot injury during his team’s 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
“Sources: Images of Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury are being sent to noted foot specialist, Dr. Robert Anderson, to be reviewed,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter wrote Sunday night on X. “If surgery is deemed necessary, it would be expected to sideline Burrow three months. Burrow was in a walking boot and on crutches after today’s game.”
The Steelers travel to square off with the Bengals for a Thursday night game on Oct. 16. Pittsburgh hosts Cincinnati a month later.
Burrow was sacked by Jaguars defensive tackle Arik Armstead during the second quarter before being looked at by Bengals trainers, limping off and heading to Cincinnati’s locker room. The CBS broadcast showed Burrow trying to get to the locker room on his own, but he eventually needed help from a trainer. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor didn’t have an update on Burrow’s status afterward.
Bengals backup Jake Browning replaced Burrow, going 21 for 32 for 241 yards. Burrow had gone 7 for 13 for 76 yards and a touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase before going off. He led the NFL in passing a campaign ago, but has dealt with a handful of injuries during his pro career. His rookie season was abbreviated due to a torn ACL, and a wrist injury ended his 2023 go-round halfway through November.
Browning stood in for Burrow after the latter injury, posting a 4-3 record. That included a 34-11 loss to the Steelers as Pittsburgh made a late-season surge into the playoffs.
