It seems likely that the Pittsburgh Steelers will entertain the notion of handing the reins to the younger of their two incumbent quarterbacks in the 2025 season, going with Justin Fields instead of Russell Wilson moving forward.
But the Steelers might not be the only team interested in having Fields be their starting quarterback this year.
Pro Football Focus included Fields in its list of the top 15 offensive free agents that are available this offseason, and a listed the best landing spot for each of the 15 players. For Fields, that spot was the New York Jets.
With a new general manager on the way to join new head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets are likely looking for a clean break from Aaron Rodgers, but his $49 million dead cap hit will leave them without much money available for a replacement.
That could have the Jets eying Fields, who was unable to hold off Russell Wilson for the starting job in Pittsburgh in 2024.
Despite that, Fields played some of the best ball of his career in the six games he filled in for Wilson. He set highs in completion percentage (65.8%), interception rate (0.6%), success rate (42.9%), quarterback rating (93.3) and adjusted net yards per attempt (5.86).
Wilson said on Wednesday that he and the Steelers have had preliminary talks about a contract extension. It’s unknown if the Steelers have had the same conversations with Fields, but they may have competition to bring him back for 2025.
