PITTSBURGH — Andrus Peat will make his first start at left tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Friday.
Peat will start in place for Broderick Jones, who has been ruled out after suffering a stinger against the Chicago Bears in Week 12.
Jones was replaced in that game by Calvin Anderson, who has been the team’s backup swing tackle since the middle of last season, but instead the team will turn to Peat against the Buffalo Bills this week.
Peat has played both left guard and left tackle over the course of his career, but has primarily played guard, with 4,477 snaps at the interior position compared to 1,959 on the exterior.
The last time he started a game at left tackle was Week 18 of the 2023 season, when he was with the New Orleans Saints. Last season, he played 11 snaps of left cable in a backup role for the Las Vegas Raiders. The 32-year-old Peat was a first-round pick of the Saints in 2015 and spent his entire career with New Orleans up until 2024.
The Steelers signed Peat in the middle of training camp this summer, and he played both left tackle and left guard in the preseason for the team.
Anderson has repped ahead of Peat almost the entire season, and Peat has been a healthy scratch for most of the season, with Anderson serving as the top backup at tackle and Spencer Anderson the top backup at guard, so the decision to go with the veteran is a bit of a curious one by Tomlin.
It’s unclear how long Jones, who is missing his first career NFL game on Sunday, will be out after suffering the stinger against the Bears.
