UNITY TWP., Pa. — With showers and thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers have moved their training camp practice at St. Vincent College on Thursday, July 31 to the morning.

The Steelers originally had been scheduled to practice at 1:55 p.m. at Chuck Noll Field. Instead, they will move their practice session to 10 a.m.

WPXI’s Stephen Cropper is forecasting a 70% chance of afternoon rain and thunderstorms on Thursday. The Steelers already had one practice session this week that was washed out because of rain. The team instead had a walkthrough in the gymnasium on Tuesday.

With one practice already washed out and the practice fields getting saturated, the Steelers will take advantage of forecasted nicer weather on Thursday morning.

The move will also give the players a bit of a break from the heat, as the heat index on the field on Wednesday was over 100 degrees. Thursday’s forecasted high is only 81.

Gates will open for fans attending practice at 8:30 a.m.

The weather won’t be a problem for much longer for Steelers training camp. St. Vincent College is currently constructing the Dunlap Family Athletic and Recreation Center, an indoor practice facility adjacent to Chuck Noll Field. The facility, paid for in part by the Steelers, is set to open in November at a cost of $20 million.

After Thursday’s session, the Steelers will have an evening practice, their annual Friday Night Lights session at Latrobe Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. They’ll return to St. Vincent for 1:55 p.m. practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday before the players have their second off day of training camp on Monday.
