DETROIT — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin mentioned cornerback Brandin Echols (groIn) and wide receiver Calvin Austin III (hamstring) in his injury roundup after Sunday’s 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions.
“Brandin Echols with a groin, Calvin Austin with a hamstring,” Tomlin said. “I’m sure there’s a laundry list of other things when you’re in a game like that.”
After tackling Lions receiver Jameson Williams, Echols exited the game with 2:49 to go in the second quarter. He was tabbed as doubtful to return with a groin injury, then was later downgraded to out.
Echols remained seated on the ground, waiting for trainers to approach to check on him. Echols got up a moment later and walked to the sideline under his own power. He then made his way to the blue medical tent.
Echols emerged from the tent and headed to the Steelers’ bench without his helmet. Jalen Ramsey replaced Echols at the nickelback position, while Chuck Clark entered to fill in for Ramsey at safety.
Echols, a fifth-year pro, has played in all 15 of the Steelers’ games this season. Entering Sunday, he had 44 total tackles, six passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He spent the first four years of his career with the New York Jets, pulling down five interceptions.
Austin did not return after suffering a hamstring injury in the second half.
When the Lions punted not a minute into the fourth quarter, Scotty Miller jogged back deep for the Steelers, taking over for Austin’s usual duties.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling momentarily exited the matchup after dropping a deep ball during the third quarter. He returned to make a grab on the Steelers’ following possession.
