PITTSBURGH — As the Indianapolis Colts drove deep into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ territory in the first quarter, veteran cornerback Darius Slay remained down before heading off the field with trainers, holding his right arm in apparent pain.
Slay briefly entered the blue medical tent before heading into the locker room, still nursing his arm. The television broadcast showed that it appeared to be a finger injury. Slay returned to the matchup, then exited again in the second frame, this time limping. He sat on the bench with the rest of the secondary after T.J. Watt strip-sacked Colts quarterback Daniel Jones
James Pierre replaced Slay ahead of a third-and-2 from his team’s 8-yard line the first time he headed off. Jones connected with standout rookie tight end Tyler Warren for a yard on the following play before tailback Jonathan Taylor powered forward to move the chains on fourth down.
Jones wound up capping the 13-play, 79-yard march with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, putting the first dent in the scoreboard.
The Steelers entered the matchup with Indianapolis with a banged-up secondary. Safety DeShon Elliott hyperextended his knee during last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers and Jabrill Peppers was listed as an inactive for the game with an injury of his own.
Kyle Dugger, acquired from the New England Patriots via trade this week, was thrust into action at the position.
Slay admitted earlier in the week that he has to improve his effort.
“I ain’t been playing the best. But I’ve been playing decent. But I gotta, on my end, for sure play better,” Slay said.
