The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t used to this. In need of a new head coach for the first time since 2007, the team’s coaching search might look different than those in the past.
Among plenty of other names, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has been floated as someone the Steelers should pursue. During an appearance on Colin Cowherd’s radio show on Wednesday, former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, a Fighting Irish alum, was asked if he would leave South Bend to take over for the Steelers if he were Freeman.
“I think because of what you have to do in Pittsburgh, it’s a very dangerous job,” Bettis said. “So I would not be in a rush to leave my cozy confines. I’ve got a really good program that I’ve created, we’re ready to go, we’ve got the players in place. I wouldn’t be in a rush to leave that.”
It seems Freeman is heeding that sort of advice. He spoke during a press conference on the same day, expressing his commitment to remaining in charge at Notre Dame.
“I’m the head coach at Notre Dame,” Freeman said. “I said this before. Individual recognition, individual success, NFL interest — those are all a reflection of team success. And where this football program is, I’ve used some of the interest from the NFL to personally gain wisdom from some of the GMs and front office executives that you get a chance to talk to about your players. And what they view as a successful coach.”
Freeman added that he didn’t have to reconsider his situation.
“Everything I want and everything I need personally can be achieved right here as the head coach of the program,” Freeman said.
