Rookie quarterback Drew Allar is getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Drew Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the hopes he can eventually be their franchise quarterback. However, Steelers legend Jerome Bettis believes that will only happen if he takes advantage of learning from Aaron Rodgers during his rookie year.
“Hopefully he can pick up a whole lot. When you have a Hall of Fame player at your position in the building, you should soak up everything you can,” Bettis said via DJ Siddiqi of Action Network. “Hopefully that happens, and Drew sees it, understands it, and utilizes it. Because that’s a rare opportunity to have a player of that stature and ability in the building, so hopefully that helps springboard him to a great career as well.”
Rodgers certainly has a ton of knowledge and wisdom that he can instill in Allar, and that’s what he needs after a rocky 2025 campaign at Penn State.
While Allar has all the physical tools to succeed at the next level, standing at 6-foot-5, 228 pounds with a rocket arm, he greatly disappointed during his final season in Happy Valley, throwing for just 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions before suffering a season-ending injury.
That is what gives Bettis hope for Allar’s future, though.
“You look at him, he’s a dynamic football player. He’s made some bad decisions in his day, and I think that’s what you gotta clean up. But you look at the physical traits and ability, it’s there,” Bettis continued. “You look at him at the end of his junior year, there was talk about him being a top 10-15 pick. He decided to come back, and it didn’t work out the way he wanted to, and got injured, and his stock fell, but it doesn’t change that his ability is still there. His capabilities are there. I think he’s a really good quarterback that just needs to learn the NFL game, and you can’t ask for a better teacher than Aaron Rodgers.”
Only time will tell how Allar’s NFL career will shake out, but Bettis likely isn’t the only one who sees the his potential.
Allar was also an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2024, leading Penn State to the College Football Playoff semifinals while passing for 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
