Kenneth Gainwell has quietly become one of the most important parts of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense. A castaway from the Philadelphia Eagles, Gainwell has become an excellent weapon for the team. With his versatility as a traditional running back as well as a pass-catching one, the Steelers are able to throw multiple looks at their opponents that prove to be hard to handle.

Who does Gainwell credit for his success this season? Well, the star running back says that Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the reason why he’s been an elite option this season.

“Aaron Rodgers, that’s all I can say,” Gainwell said, per Matthew Luciow on X. “Him trusting me, my hands, doing the small things and going out there and working.”

Gainwell, who backed up Saquon Barkley when he was in Philadelphia last season, has been stellar for the Steelers. While he hasn’t started most games, he’s quietly acquired 451 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns.

Being a traditional running back isn’t what makes Gainwell a key cog on the offense though. It’s his ability to go from running back to a pass-catcher that makes Gainwell so good. Through 14 games, Gainwell has caught 57 of his 66 targets for 332 yards and two touchdowns. His ability to line up at the slot position adds another dimension to their game that makes the Steelers offense look better.

The Steelers are coming off a dominant win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 15. Gainwell rushed for 80 yards in the game and caught 7 passes for 47 yards. While he didn’t find the endzone during the game, Gainwell established himself as the main running back during the game, outsnapping Jaylen Warren during the contest.
