Most Pittsburgh Steelers fans are trying to process the defensive implications of trading Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins for fellow three-time All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey, but there is an offensive component to the blockbuster that demands their attention. Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith is now Aaron Rodgers’ newest pass-catcher. Management is clearly excited to welcome in the veteran, as demonstrated by the one-year, $12 million contract extension it is committing to him, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Smith skipped Dolphins’ mandatory minicamp as part of his pursuit of a new deal, so a split was becoming more likely by the day. Ramsey’s future with the franchise was even murkier. Miami, to the surprise of many, sought to rid itself of these two issues in one fell swoop. The Steelers were happy to accommodate the Dolphins’ ambitions, sending their fan-favorite safety down south in exchange for a player they hope can still effectively function as a top cornerback.
Again, though, Smith’s presence cannot be overlooked. His new contract ensures as much.
The 2017 third-round draft pick has flown under the radar for much of his career, but he has managed to get himself paid multiple times by enjoying unexpected surges with the Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins, respectively. Smith recorded 88 receptions for 884 yards last season — smashing his previous personal-best marks — while also scoring eight touchdowns.
Does he have any shot at replicating that type of production? When evaluating the 29-year-old’s entire body of work, one would assume the answer to that question is a resounding no, but he can still add value to the Steelers’ offense. Smith has become a significantly better pass-blocker over the last few seasons, giving him more opportunities to see the field rather than just in receiving situations. That should come in handy in Pittsburgh.
Although the 6-foot-3, 248-pounder will likely have less targets with star wide receiver DK Metcalf and fellow TE Pat Freiermuth on the field, he should get the chance to build a strong connection with Rodgers. The Steelers are desperate for offense and do not have the luxury of being picky at this point. They must trust that an experienced talent like Jonnu Smith can nudge them a bit closer to consistent competency.
