Steelers’ Jalen Ramsey Terrorizes Browns in Unexpected Way

PITTSBURGH — DeShon Elliott knew Jalen Ramsey had it in him. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ safety wasn’t going to give credit for the latter’s two sacks without a friendly jab.

“I mean, he’s a potential gold jacket,” Elliott said after their team’s 23-9 home win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. “You kind of expect those things from somebody like that. When it happens, though, you’re like, ‘Dang.’ Especially when I see him track the quarterback down from one side right to the other side, I didn’t know his old self still had it. I (didn’t) know he had that speed on him still.”

“That’s crazy,” Ramsey muttered from behind him at his locker.

From the slot in the first quarter, Ramsey raced in and speared unsuspecting Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel for a 7-yard loss on a first-and-10 from Cleveland’s 48-yard line. Gabriel saw Ramsey coming on a third-and-8 in the fourth quarter and tried to escape to no avail.

The 10th-year defensive back had three sacks in his entire career leading into Sunday.

“I’m gonna probably tell my kids about this. I played in a game with T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett and I had two sacks,” Ramsey said. “That’s crazy, huh? That’s crazy. My first time in my whole career having two sacks in one game, so that’s pretty cool, too.”

Garrett — and the rest of the Browns — couldn’t bring Aaron Rodgers down during the divisional clash. Like Ramsey, Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig had a pair of sacks, Derrick Harmon one more and Alex Highsmith and Watt shared one.

“It just shows his versatility,” Highsmith said of Ramsey’s effort. “Not only is he one of the best cover guys in the league, but he’s also one of the best blitzers.”

“There’s nothing he can’t do on the field,” Cam Heyward added.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Ramsey is “exactly what we hoped he would be.” He finished with six total tackles on the day, as well.

“He’s a playmaker, man. He’s been doing that forever,” Peppers said. “That is crazy, though, because I don’t think Myles had a sack today.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, another one of the Steelers’ marquee offseason additions and a future Pro Football Hall of Famer himself, was impressed by Ramsey’s will to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered during the team’s win over the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland.

“I’ve been around the game a long time, and I’ve seen a lot of guys in a situation where you got a Sunday/Thursday, skip both games,” Rodgers said. “Where maybe they’re 85%, but they want to be 100%. … I think some guys are scared to go out there and play, but for Jalen to go out there with everything...
