Steelers injury report: Vital players return to Wednesday practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their first AFC North tilt of the 2025 campaign as the Cleveland Browns travel to Acrisure Stadium. The black and gold hit the injury bug hard in the opening five weeks of the season. However, they may get some key pieces back at the perfect time.

Several injured Steelers could return to game action Sunday

Pittsburgh’s trip to Ireland left the squad bumped and bruised heading into the bye week. Now, as their first home game in nearly a month awaits, some players appear close to a return.

As head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the club’s wounded players, only two did not participate in Wednesday’s practice.

  • CB Jalen Ramsey: Did Not Participate (Hamstring)
  • WR Calvin Austin III: Did Not Participate (Shoulder)
  • LB Alex Highsmith: Limited Participant (Ankle)
  • CB Joey Porter Jr.: Full Participant (Hamstring)
  • RB Jaylen Warren: Full Participant (Knee)

With Highsmith, Warren, and Porter looking promising to go Sunday, Tomlin assured fans that Ramsey and Austin are not far behind themselves.

“Two guys that we’re watching very closely that certainly are going to be limited at the front part of the week, but may perk up and be included toward the latter part of the week, are Calvin Austin with his shoulder and Jalen Ramsey with his hamstring,” said Tomlin. “Both have been aggressive from a rehabilitation standpoint during the bye week.”

Luckily for the Steelers, the early bye week could allow some of their banged-up stars to return to action without missing a game. If not, Austin and Ramsey’s vital roles will need to be filled.

At the wide receiver position, Roman Wilson and Scotty Miller will likely be called upon if the Memphis product misses time. For Wilson this could be the moment he needs to make an impact and get his foot in the door of a team that has been patiently waiting for his arrival.

Defensively, Ramsey has been a ballhawk for the Steelers thus far. Similarly, the former New York Jet and Ramsey’s backup, Brandin Echols, has been stout. Through the opening four games, Echols has 11 total tackles, a pass defense, and an interception. Look for the 27-year-old to come up big against Cleveland if Ramsey is sidelined.

The latest rendition of the Browns Steelers rivalry kicks off from Acrisure Stadium at 1 p.m. EST Sunday.
