The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted former Carolina Panthers quarterback Jack Plummer for a tryout on Tuesday, according to the NFL transitions page.

Plummer, 26, was an undrafted free agent of the Panthers in 2024 out of Louisville. He spent most of his rookie season on the Carolina practice squad and did not appear in a game. He was released by the Panthers in August and has not been on another NFL team since.

The Steelers played against Plummer in the 2025 preseason. He stared the Week 3 preseason game between Pittsburgh and Carolina at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Aug. 21.

In that game, he completed seven of 14 passes for 48 yards. He threw one interception and hit James Mitchell for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Plummer is a Dubuque, Iowa native. He got his collegiate career started at Purdue in 2018, and started six games for the Boilermakers as a redshirt freshman in 2019. He lost the starting job to Aidan O’Connell in 2020, but played three games after O’Connell was injured, and played well enough to earn the starting job going into the 2021 season, but was benched in favor of O’Connell after four games.

Plummer then transferred to Cal in 2022, where he had a strong season, completed 282 of 451 passes for 3,119 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was awarded a sixth season of eligibility for 2023, and spent it with Louisville, starting all 14 games and throwing for 3,204 yards and 21 touchdowns.

The Steelers released quarterback/wide receiver John Rhys Plumlee from their practice squad this week, so they could be looking for someone to run the scout team at practice, or they could be looking to sign a player to a reserve/future contract for the 2026 season. That process begins as soon as the regular season ends, and teams frequently try to get a head start on it with visits in December.

Plummer was one of nine players to try out on Tuesday, including former Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker, ex-Steelers tight end JJ Galbreath, tight end Colin Granger, wide receiver Johnny Johnson, wide receiver Brandon Smith, running back Tre Smith, wide receiver Chris Tyree and running back Jordan Waters.
