Steelers Hire Western Pa. Native as Inside Linebackers Coach

With the Pittsburgh Steelers seeing the departure of Aaron Curry, they were certainly in the market for a new linebackers coach to take over. On Friday night, reports surfaced that the Steelers hired a familiar face to the Pittsburgh area for this position in former Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach Scott McCurley.

After interviewing for the position earlier this week, former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers defensive coach, McCurley was has been hired by the Steelers for the vacant inside linebacker position, as first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

McCurley is familiar with the Pittsburgh area. In fact, he is a native of New Castle and played collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh. After playing linebacker at Pitt, he started his coaching career at his alma mater before getting his NFL break in 2006, with the Green Bay Packers after being hired as an intern by fellow Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy.

McCurley worked his way up in the ranks in Green Bay, from intern to quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach until McCarthy and company’s departure following the 2018 season. He then followed McCarthy to Dallas to serve as linebackers coach.

He will be one of two new faces on the defensive staff this offseason, along with new defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander. The moves on the defensive staff have been somewhat of a surprise with Aaron Curry and Grady Brown not being retained. However, with the issues from the secondary and middle of the field down the stretch in 2024, it shouldn’t be a total surprise.
