The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a 13-6 Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, leaving the window open for the Baltimore Ravens to potentially jump Pittsburgh in the playoff standings in Week 18. Everything seemed to fall apart in the closing moments of Sunday’s contest after Aaron Rodgers threw to Marquez Valdes-Scantling three consecutive plays. Mike Tomlin weighs in on the decision-making of the game.
While talking with media members during the postgame press conference, Tomlin, who is 53 years old, claimed that he has no regrets about Rodgers throwing to Valdes-Scantling multiple times to end the game, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN.
“[Aaron Rodgers] had eligibles on the play, and certainly [Marquez Valdes-Scantling] was one of them, and [Valdes-Scantling is] a capable guy,” said Mike Tomlin. “I got no qualms about us playing to win the game in the way that we did.”
The 31-year-old wide receiver led the Steelers with nine targets on Sunday. However, he only managed to catch three of those for 21 yards. For whatever reason, Rodgers locked in on Valdes-Scantling near the end of the contest, despite the wideout not doing much with his opportunities beforehand.
Sunday’s game was Valdes-Scantling’s fourth with Pittsburgh this season. The wide receiver room is a bit thin right now, as the Steelers are without DK Metcalf after he was suspended for throwing a punch at a fan in the 29-24 Week 16 win over the Detroit Lions. The team was looking for someone to step up, and Rodgers certainly chose to throw to someone he used to play with during his time with the Green Bay Packers.
The Steelers will take on the Ravens in Week 18. With how the standings are playing out, the winner of that game will make the playoffs.
