PITTSBURGH — Mike Tomlin wasn’t thrilled that Jalen Ramsey was cast out of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 34-12 win on Sunday, even though the latter was apparently spat on.
Ramsey threw a punch at Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase after the disrespectful gesture, not long after the two were already flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for getting tangled up. The Steelers safety’s second unsportsmanlike conduct infraction landed him in the locker room for the rest of the fourth quarter.
Tomlin was asked afterward if there was any explanation for Ramsey getting so heated.
“I didn’t need any. It doesn’t matter,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got to be smarter. We’ve got to stay in football games as individuals.”
Before Sunday, Ramsey had been ejected from an NFL game twice. He was tossed from a game as a rookie for fighting with then-Oakland Raiders receiver Johnny Holton. The next season, he and then-Cincinnati Bengals wideout A.J. Green got into it and were thrown out.
This time, of course, Ramsey had a more arguable reason to throw hands.
“He spit on me, so it’s up. I don’t give a fuck about football after that — respectfully,” Ramsey said. “I’m always gonna be all for trash-talking, shit-talking, stuff like that. I actually enjoy that part of the game. I think people know that. And that’s what we (were) doing. … Yeah, soon as he spit, it was, ‘Fuck that.’ Yeah, I ain’t gonna tolerate that part of it.”
Chase denied spitting on Ramsey, saying, “I ain’t never opened my mouth to that guy.”
