The Pittsburgh Steelers have won a remarkable 22 straight games on Monday Night Football in Pittsburgh, last losing on Oct. 14, 1991 against the New York Giants at Three Rivers Stadium.
The Steelers’ MNF home streak will be put on the line on Monday night against the red-hot Miami Dolphins, who have won four straight games and five of their last six games after starting the season 1-6.
The Steelers will have a weather advantage over the Dolphins on Monday night with projected forecasts calling for it to be 18 degrees on the banks of the three rivers. The Dolphins have lost 12 straight games when the temperature is below 40 degrees.
The Dolphins practiced in the snow on Saturday night in Pittsburgh to try to get acclimated to the cold weather before Monday’s game.
According to a recent article in the Palm Beach Post, with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa starting, the Dolphins are 0-5 when the game-time temp is 40 degrees are colder, and it’s going to be nowhere near 40 on Monday night.
With frigid temperatures, it could be a run-heavy game for both teams. And that bodes well for the Dolphins’ lethal rushing attack.
The Dolphins have recorded 160+ rushing yards in each of last four games, the first time with 160+ rushing yards in four straight since Weeks 2-5 in 1977, according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. The Dolphins’ 192.3 rushing yards per game since Week 10 is the most in NFL.
To say the least, the Steelers’ run defense has not been good this year. They’ve allowed over 200 yards rushing in each of their last two games, including an Acrisure Stadium record 249 yards allowed to the Buffalo Bills.
The Steelers have given up a league high 785 yards rushing since Week 10 and third-most per game (157).
Dolphins running back De’Von Achane has been on a tear this season, rushing for 1,126 yards on 193 carries (5.8 average) and four touchdowns. He also has 55 receptions for 383 yards (7.0 average) and four touchdowns.
The Dolphins have won three of their last five meetings against the Steelers. One of those wins was a cold-weather victory in Pittsburgh, winning a 2013 game where snow covered the playing surface at Heinz Field.
Two of the Steelers’ victories during their 22 straight MNF wins in Pittsburgh came against the Dolphins, the infamous 3-0 “Mud Bowl” in 2007 and a 2019 game with Mason Rudolph under center.
