College Football’s top coach, Curt Cignetti of Indiana, weighed in on the Brendan Sorsby situation that has captured the attention of the football world.
After announcing his plan to return to college football in 2026, his gambling issues surfaced and Sorsby was stripped of his NCAA eligibility.
Since then, there’s been an ongoing legal battle, but he recently surrendered his hand and announced he is applying to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft in July.
Sorsby placed more than 9,000 bets totaling at least $90,000 across a four-year span. Court documents revealed that during his time at Indiana alone, he placed at least 2,900 bets, which included 40 impermissible wagers on his own football team.
Sorsby never played under Cignetti at Indiana, but they did cross paths.
“I know Brendan a little bit. He was actually in the program for about a week and a half when I was hired,” Cignetti said during a Thursday appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. “I think he’s an outstanding quarterback and a great kid. I think he’s going to be a great pro with the proper support to overcome some of the issues he’s had.
“I think he’s got a lot of talent, and there will be an NFL team real happy to have him.”
One NFL team that has been heavily linked to Sorsby is the Pittsburgh Steelers. In fact, Kalshi’s prediction markets has the Steelers as the favorites to land Sorsby.
The Steelers quarterbacks coach is Frank Cignetti Jr., who’s the brother of Curt Cignetti. Sorsby was with Curt Cignetti for a brief time, but the Steelers do have an interesting link to Sorsby. Every amount of intel is crucial, given Sorsby’s past history.
It would be hard to believe there are zero teams interested in Sorsby, especially because he was regarded as a first-round talent last season while throwing for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and just five interceptions, leading the Big 12 with a 13.5 yards-per-completion average.
NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay thinks the Steelers would be an ideal landing spot for Sorsby.
“Can’t you see the Steelers?” McShay said on The McShay Show. “Because the Steelers have been mired in this, we’re good enough every year. We’re right on the fringe. We’re either in the playoffs, getting knocked out early or we just miss the playoffs. So we’re always picking around 21 or 23 or 25, so we can’t get that guy. … This is a unique opportunity for the Steelers. I’m just throwing it out there.”
