If there’s one weakness on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster right now, it’s definitely at the No. 2 wide receiver position. They are in the same spot as they were last year when they did not have a secondary receiver for George Pickens.

Despite the lack of depth, general manager Omar Khan has great confidence in the current crops of receivers.

“I feel really good about that receiver room,” Khan said during an interview on the 102.5 WDVE’s Morning Show on Tuesday. “In my opening press conference, I got a bunch of questions comparing it to last year. And to me, it’s not even close. I mean, you guys saw some of it this past weekend … Calvin (Austin) is banged up a little bit, but we’ll get him back. But Roman Wilson and Brandon Johnson, you saw the emergence of young guys like Ke’Shawn (Williams) and obviously we added DK (Metcalf). I feel good about this group. And when we traded for Jonnu [Smith], I loved his versatility.”

Calvin Austin III, who was expected to be the team’s No. 2 wide receiver, has been hampered with an abdominal muscle injury for a good portion of training camp. Veteran Scotty Miller is one receiver who has turned heads at training camp. He could be a reliable option for the club this season.

“I pride myself on, for one, just being able to do what I (am asked) to do,” Miller said. “Just the receiver position, just being able to play all the different spots, being able to play the slot, being able to go outside and beat bigger corners one on one, and then just being able to help on special teams as well. So I try to just be versatile and try to help the team any way I can.”

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also gave Miller a ringing endorsement.

“He knows all the spots,” Tomlin said. “He’s highly conditioned. He’s very competitive. He’s a been-there, done-that guy, and so there’s a lot of value in his presence.”

While Khan has a great deal of confidence in the wide receivers room, all options are still on the table to make a move.

“If there’s something worth looking at, we will. We look at a lot of things,” Khan said. “I’d like to tell you that they all come to fruition, but probably less than 10 percent of ’em do.”

The Green Bay Packers have been tabbed as potential trade partners for the Steelers with an abundance of wide receivers, currently rostering veterans Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks and Mecole Hardman as well as first- and third-round rookies Matthew Golden and Savion Williams.

However, several of the Packers wide receivers have suffered injuries as of late, putting their statuses up in the air for the start of the season and likely diminishing any chances of the team dealing any of its healthy options.
