The Pittsburgh Steelers now know what safety DeShon Elliott’s injury is after he left Sunday’s 34-32 win against the New York Jets. Elliott, a seventh-year pro, is dealing with an MCL sprain, but the duration of his absence is unclear.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport characterized it as a day-to-day injury. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Elliott’s “injury absence shorter term as of now. Don’t know an exact timetable.”

Elliott suffered the injury when another player rolled into the side of his left leg on a Breece Hall run during the second quarter of the win. Elliott got to his feet, but threw his helmet in frustration as the Steelers’ training staff approached. He walked to the blue medical tent on the sideline on his own, but exited with a limp and no helmet.

Elliott was listed as doubtful to return and never did. The Steelers replaced him with a combination of a roving Jalen Ramsey and backup Chuck Clark. Before the Steelers signed former Michigan star Jabrill Peppers on Tuesday morning, special teamer Miles Killebrew was the team’s only other safety.

Elliott had the second-most tackles of any Steelers player last season, recording 108. Linebacker Patrick Queen, a fellow former Baltimore Raven, was the team’s leader.

Up until Elliott’s injury, the Steelers allowed 91 yards on the ground, an average of 4.6 yards per tote. The Jets finished with 182 rushing yards on 39 attempts. Former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields had 12 carries for 48 yard and a pair of scores. Hall led the team with 107 yards on 19 gives.
