CLEVELAND — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed after Sunday’s 13-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns that tight end Darnell Washington suffered a broken arm.
Tomlin said he was unsure if Washington will be out for Sunday’s pivotal AFC North matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
Washington exited Sunday’s matchup in the first quarter. The Steelers’ massive tight end headed to the locker room and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest. He was seen later in a sling on the sideline.
Washington had a pair of grabs in the first quarter, picking up 15 yards. A third-round draft pick in 2023, Washington has emerged as a sizeable part of the Steelers’ attack, having recorded 29 receptions for 349 yards and a touchdown entering Sunday.
Rodgers had his worst statistical performance of the season, finishing 21 of 39 for 168 yards. He did not throw an interception, but was sacked twice, fumbled once and maintained a mere 64.9 passer rating.
Rodgers was without three of his top targets in DK Metcalf (suspension), Calvin Austin III (hamstring) and Washington.
Rodgers’ leading receiver was tight end Pat Freiermuth, who had one catch entering the final drive of the game and finished with three catches for 63 yards.
The Steelers’ loss will set up a winner-take-all Week 18 game for the AFC North between the Steelers and Ravens at Acrisure Stadium. The date and time of that game has not been announced.
Not having Washington will throw a big wrench in the Steelers’ offensive game plan against Baltimore. The offense not having Metcalf for a second consecutive week also is not encouraging.
