UNITY TWP., PA. — The bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday was that the list of players that did not participate in practice on Saturday was almost as long as the ones that did.

The good news, is that almost all of them will only have short-term absences, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers rested a bunch of veteran players, including Cam Heyward, DK Metcalf, Aaron Rodgers, Jonnu Smith and T.J. Watt.

They also gave a bunch of players banged up with minor issues the day off, including Calvin Austin III, Keeanu Benton, Donte Kent, Ryan McCollum and Joey Porter Jr.

That entire list of players could return as soon as tomorrow, Tomlin said. He also said they could get some good news about players working their way back from more significant injury.

“You can characterize it as day to day,” he said. “You should see those guys out here pretty soon. … Got a lot of bumps and bruises associated with this process but also got some guys that could be working their way back. Big O could work his way back to us very soon — tomorrow. DJ Thomas-Jones, same thing.”

Esezi Otomewo has been out since Wednesday with a right knee injury. DJ Thomas-Jones has been out since Sunday with a left calf/ankle injury.

Two other players that were both injured during the team’s Friday Night Lights practice will be out longer-term: cornerback Cory Trice and tackle Calvin Anderson.

“We’ve got some guys with some soft tissue injuries that could be more than a few days like Cory Trice or Calvin Anderson,” Tomlin said.
