UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon is dealing with a minor injury that caused him to miss practice on Wednesday, head coach Mike Tomlin said.
Harmon was not seen at all during the team’s 12th practice of training camp at St. Vincent College on Sunday. Tomlin was vague about the specifics of the injury.
“Just minor things associated with the rigors of training camp,” Tomlin said.
Harmon has been working in the starting lineup as a rookie, and should have been one of the top players to watch for the Steelers in the team’s preseason opener on Saturday, but his absence on Wednesday due to injury could put his participation in that game in doubt.
The team has just one more practice session on Thursday before traveling to Jacksonville on Friday for Saturday’s game.
A Detroit native, Harmon played three seasons at Michigan State before transferring to Oregon in 2024. He had five sacks and 11 tackles for loss for the Ducks last season.
With Cam Heyward also held out of team drills as well, Isaiahh Loudermilk was in the starting defensive lineman in the team’s Nickel alignment. Loudermilk had a coverage sack of Aaron Rodgers in the seven shots team period.
Harmon is one of three members of the Steelers 2025 NFL Draft class that could be seen as trending toward not playing this week. Sixth-round quarterback Will Howard has been ruled out of with a broken pinky finger, and while seventh-round cornerback Donte Kent had the walking boot off his right foot/ankle injury, he did not practice on Wednesday.
