T.J. Watt and Myles Garrett have long had a rivalry on and off the field. When Watt found out that Garrett was going to win the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, he skipped the ceremony entirely. That didn’t sit right with Garrett.
“I’ve never complained about the trophy not being in my house, and vice versa, he shouldn’t be feeling two ways about it going to me,” Garrett said. “We’re just gonna play the game. I don’t play against T.J. He doesn’t play against me. We’re playing to do what we’re supposed to, go out and do what we’re supposed to, win the game and dominate on defense.”
Then following the Browns’ 24-19 win over the Steelers in Week 12 of last season, Garrett made sure to sink the knife in deeper.
“I have a lot of respect for him … but I’m number 1. That’s from Edge 1 to Defensive Player of the Year. I’m the guy. That runs through me,” Garrett said. “There’s no other person being schemed or planned against like I am. It just shows, you can throw that out the window. I’m gonna find a way.”
The Browns fanbase was not happy when Watt surpassed Garrett as the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history earlier this month. The two fanbases often go back and forth on social media over who’s the better edge rusher.
On Wednesday during The Pat McAfee Show at St. Vincent College, Steelers Nation expressed their disdain for the Browns All-Pro by chanting, “F*** Myles Garrett!”
Cam Heyward then pointed the mic toward the crowd. Watt just smiled.

In ESPN’s annual survey that includes voting from league executives, coaches and scouts to help rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions, Myles Garrett once again ranked ahead of T.J. Watt at the edge rusher position. Watt has better numbers than Garrett in almost every major defensive statistical category, however.
“Watt is a worthy rival to Garrett in the AFC North. His 108 career sacks rank third all time for a player’s first eight seasons, behind Reggie White (124) and DeMarcus Ware (111). He’s a near-lock for an All-Pro team every year. And he leads the NFL in forced fumbles (10) over the past two seasons, along with being second in sacks (30.5) and quarterback hits (63). But he’s stuck in the No. 2 spot for the second consecutive year while Garrett separates,” ESPN wrote.
