The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to add to their prospective pool of coaching candidates beyond the eight coaches they have already started to interview, according to a report by Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Steelers have requested eight interviews so far, with the first of those interviews taking place virtually on Friday — Los Angeles Rams coaches Chris Shula and Nate Scheelhaase. The Steelers can interview coaches that are still coaching in the playoffs virtually until their team is eliminated or reaches the off week before the Super Bowl.
Starting Monday, coaches whose teams have been eliminated can interview in-person with the club.
So far, the Steelers’ eight interview request have included seven coaches who have never been a head coach before (with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores as the only exception) and six current defensive coordinators (with Scheelhaase and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak the exceptions).
They could continue to target sitting defensive coordinators, such as Robert Saleh of the San Francisco 49ers, Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos or Jim Schwartz of the Cleveland Browns — who have head coaching experience — or Matt Burke of the Houston Texans or Anthony Campanile of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who do not.
If they want to expand the offensive offerings, Klay’s older brother, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski would both make sense.
The last three hires for the Steelers have all been young defensive coordinator, but president Art Rooney II said the Steelers would not be constrained by any specific mold when seeking a successor to Mike Tomlin.
