Sebastian Castro didn’t survive the Pittsburgh Steelers’ final roster trims on Tuesday. The undrafted rookie safety was cut loose along with fellow safety Chuck Clark and cornerbacks Beanie Bishop and James Pierre.
Castro was hoping to latch on in a room that includes DeShon Elliott and Juan Thornhill. The Steelers might bring Clark back soon since he doesn’t have to go through waivers.
During the Steelers’ three preseason contests, Castro totaled 11 tackles. As a redshirt senior at Iowa, Castro was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree, racking up 45 stops, three tackles for loss, an interception, a pass breakup and a forced fumble. He was a Pro Football Focus first-team All-American the campaign before.

That year, he played in the same secondary as Cooper DeJean, now a Philadelphia Eagles cornerback who was an Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate a season ago.
Castro’s release is his latest setback after not hearing his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“For someone who thinks they’re going to get drafted and then don’t end up getting drafted, it’s like a shot to the heart. It definitely adds motivation,” Castro said. “That’s part of the game, though. That’s why I love this game. You’re never going to win every single day and you’re never going to be perfect.”
Special teams ace Miles Killebrew can also line up at safety for the Steelers. Killebrew has 56 combined tackles in 68 games played in black and gold. Jalen Ramsey, acquired for Minkah Fitzpatrick in June, is also versatile enough to play back there.
