Even having dealt with injuries, Derrick Harmon proved to be a worthwhile first-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. He was recognized for his efforts on Wednesday, receiving the Steelers’ Joe Greene Performance Award, which is presented to the team’s top rookie during the annual rookie luncheon.

Harmon fought off knee injuries to post three sacks and 27 combined tackles last season, along with recovering a fumble. Recent recipients of the Joe Greene Performance Award include Najee Harris (2021), Joey Porter Jr. (2023) and Zach Frazier (2024).

Last week, Harmon talked to Steelers Now about his biggest takeaway from being a newcomer.

“Just the little details of things, man,” Harmon said after a minicamp practice last week at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. “This league, you’ve gotta really be on your details and Ps and Qs. Everybody’s a good athlete in this league.”

First-year Steelers defensive line coach Domata Peko, who spent most of his playing career in the AFC North, is thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Harmon.

“Big Harm is a specimen, man,” Peko said during OTAs last month. “It’s pretty crazy getting him out there on the field and just seeing him move around. He’s a big dude, but he moves around like a linebacker. He’s really athletic, and (I’m) excited for him, as well.”
