PITTSBURGH — Surrounded by reporters on Wednesday, DK Metcalf answered questions with canned responses. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ No. 1 receiver didn’t have much color to offer.
He’s eager to play beside his new teammates, he said. He isn’t worried about not having played during the preseason, mainly because of how tough the Steelers’ defense has been. The offense’s goal, according to him, is to score as many points as it can.
Someone asked him if he anticipates Sauce Gardner, a two-time first-team Associated Press All-Pro, shadowing him at MetLife Stadium during the Steelers’ regular-season opener against the New York Jets on Sunday.
“Whoever they put out there, man,” Metcalf said, swatting the question down.
Another wondered if he had sought advice from Brandin Echols or Chuck Clark on how to approach the Jets’ secondary, which they were part of last season. Finally, Metcalf had something compelling to say.
“The way I look at the game, bro, is they gotta stop me, and they gotta stop our offense,” Metcalf said. “I don’t think me asking them will be a lot of insight because I feel like I’m a different player than a lot of receivers that they’ve gone up against in the past.”
Adding to Metcalf’s confidence is the fact that he’s built a rapport with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, one of the Steelers’ other marquee offseason additions. Their connection could be what Steelers fans are looking most forward to seeing in New Jersey.
“I just think our signaling, the way we see the game, I’m starting to get a feel for what he’s gonna do at the line of scrimmage, if he’s gonna make a check or not and then just the type of throws he makes in certain coverages,” Metcalf said.
