The Pittsburgh Steelers might have walked out of Ford Field with a chaotic 29-24 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, but the biggest story wasn’t on the scoreboard. It was on the sideline, where Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf found himself in a heated altercation with a fan, and then nowhere to be found when reporters entered the locker room.
Midway through the second quarter, Metcalf was caught on camera swiping at a Lions fan seated in the front row. The fan, sporting a blue wig and a split jersey, appeared to exchange words with the star wideout before Metcalf threw a closed-fist punch toward him. Because officials missed the incident live, Metcalf wasn’t flagged or ejected, staying in the game to the confusion of the Detroit faithful.
However, anyone hoping for an explanation from the man himself was out of luck. According to Steelers reporter Chris Adamski, Metcalf bolted from the locker room before the media was allowed in, dodging questions about the swipe that will almost certainly draw a fine or suspension from the NFL office this week.
It was a frustrating afternoon all around for Metcalf. While the Steelers improved to 9-6 and held onto first place in the AFC North, their star receiver was a non-factor. Metcalf finished with just four catches for 42 yards on nine targets.
He appeared to salvage his day with a touchdown catch in the third quarter from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but the score was wiped off the board due to offensive pass interference on tight end Darnell Washington.
Instead, the offense ran through running back Jaylen Warren, who exploded for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and a vintage performance from Rodgers, who threw for 266 yards. But with a potential suspension looming for Metcalf, Pittsburgh’s playoff push just got a lot more complicated.
