The Pittsburgh Steelers chose not to renew the contract of secondary coach Grady Brown, a team source confirmed to Steelers Now, instead hiring Gerald Alexander as a replacement.

Alexander, the team’s former assistant secondary coach, returns to Pittsburgh after one season with the Las Vegas Raiders as safeties coach.

The news of Alexander joining the Steelers coaching staff was first reported on Friday, but it was not immediately clear what role he would have in the team’s coaching hierarchy.

Anthony Midget replaced Alexander as the assistant secondary coach in 2024, and remains listed among the team’s defensive coaches.

The news of Brown’s departure comes as a bit of a surprise, as he has recently interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons for their defensive coordinator position and was seen as an up-and-coming coach in league circles.

But the Steelers secondary obviously struggled with repeated instances of communication issues, busted coverages and missed assignments in 2024, and him not returning could be an acknowledgement of that.

Swapping Brown for Alexander is the second change to the Steelers defensive coaching staff, following the departure of linebackers coach Aaron Curry, who took a similar role with the New York Jets. The Steelers have not yet replaced Curry, but have had one confirmed interview in former Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach Scott McCurley.

The team’s coordinators all appear set to return for the 2025 season, but further changes could happen among the position coaches.
