UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Esezi Otomewo suffered a knee injury at practice on Wednesday and is being evaluated, head coach Mike Tomlin announced.

Otomewo and Joey Porter Jr. teamed up to stop a Kaleb Johnson run during the seven shots period of Wednesday’s practice. Otomewo was slow to get up and was helped off the field.

“We had one injury to speak of,” Tomlin said. “O went down. His knee is being evaluated. The rest is just bumps and bruises associated with play, a few heat related things, nothing that should be long term with anyone else.”

Otomewo, 26, is in his first season with the Steelers. He signed with the team early this offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 6-foot-5, 282-pound defensive lineman appeared in four games in four games in 2024 while remaining on the Jacksonville practice squad, and made two starts for the Jaguars, recording four tackles and two quarterback hits. He played a total of 90 defensive snaps and also was a multi-phase special teams player, working on kickoff return, kickoff coverage, punt return and field goal units.

Otomewo did not appear at all in the 2023 season. The Indianapolis native was originally a fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 NFL Draft coming out of Minnesota. He played in five games, recording five tackles, one for a loss for the Vikings in 2022.

Otomewo has been working with the third team at defensive end, rotating along with Yahya Black, Logan Lee and Jacob Slade.
