Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin continues to gain national recognition for his work leading one of the NFL’s most consistent defenses. In a recent ranking by Pro Football Network, Austin was named the 7th-best defensive playcaller in the league, placing him firmly in the upper echelon of NFL coordinators.

PFN praised Austin for the defense’s performance in 2024, stating:

“The Steelers were 12th in Defense+ last year, which is a respectable ranking. Most notably, they led the NFL with 33 defensive takeaways. Their stability as an above-average unit over the previous three years shows that Austin is one of the better defensive coordinators in the game today.”

Since taking over in 2022, Austin has been a steady hand on a defense that has been the backbone of the Steelers’ identity. The unit has consistently ranked in the top half of the league in key metrics such as takeaways, sacks, and red zone efficiency. His ability to maintain high-level production year over year reflects not only his tactical acumen but also his ability to prepare and develop players.

However, some context is worth mentioning. Austin has had the benefit of working with one of the most talented and highest paid defensive rosters in the league, including perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate T.J. Watt, veteran leader Cameron Heyward, and until recently, All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. With that kind of personnel, expectations are understandably high.

Austin’s job hasn’t been easy, though. The AFC North is one of the most competitive divisions in football, with quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson testing defensive game plans every week. Even with elite talent, containing that level of offensive firepower is a tall task, making the Steelers’ sustained success under Austin all the more notable.

There have been moments though, particularly late in seasons, where the unit has faltered. In 2024, the Steelers defense gave up 34 points and 186 rushing yards in a pivotal Week 18 loss to the Ravens, a performance that effectively ended their playoff hopes. Just weeks earlier, they surrendered 29 points to the Chiefs on Christmas Day in another disappointing outing.

Looking ahead to 2025, the defense enters a transition period. While Fitzpatrick’s trade leaves a hole in the secondary, Pittsburgh retooled by acquiring All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and using a first round pick on disruptive defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. Both additions bring immediate impact potential and give Austin new tools to work with.

If Austin can mesh these new pieces into his system and get consistent performances down the stretch, there is a real possibility that Pittsburgh’s defense could rise into elite territory again. His ranking among the NFL’s best is well earned, but 2025 may be the defining year of his tenure.
