The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran wide receiver Robert Woods from the practice squad, the team announced on Monday. Woods was signed to the practice squad after being released on cut-down day.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Woods asked for and was granted his release from the Steelers practice squad. Rapoport also noted that Woods only wants to continue playing if heโs on a 53-man roster and playing.
Woods, 33, joined the Steelers on a one-year free agent contract this offseason.
Despite his veteran presence and resume, Woods saw limited action with the first team in preseason play. In fact, he was seen playing deep into the Steelersโ preseason finale. Despite the reduced competition, in 69 offensive snaps, he was targeted just one time, making one catch for four yards.
The former Los Angeles Rams receiver came into the league after being drafted in the second round of the 2013 draft by the Buffalo Bills. He won a Super Bowl after departing for Los Angeles.
Before joining Pittsburgh, Woods spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans following his Los Angeles tenure.
Woods is coming off a career-worst season with the Houston Texans in 2024, when he caught 20 passes for 203 yards over 15 games, and was not given an increased role in the offense despite a rash of injuries at the position for Houston.
