The Pittsburgh Steelers released quarterback Logan Woodside from their practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.

Woodside was re-signed by the team on Sept. 10, after Skylar Thompson was placed on the injured reserve list with a hamstring injury suffered in practice. Woodside was not elevated for any games while on the practice squad and the Steelers have not had a third quarterback dressed since Thompson’s injury.

Both Thompson and sixth-round draft pick Will Howard are eligible to be returned from the practice squad. Howard has been on the IR since before Week 1 after suffering a broken pinky finger during training camp.

It’s likely that one of Howard or Thompson will return this week. Third-string reps have been very sporadic for the Steelers through the early part of the season, though with a stretch of 11 games in 11 weeks coming up, the team may being to give 41-year-old starter Aaron Rodgers some rest on practice days.

Woodside was first added to the Pittsburgh roster mid-training camp, after Howard’s injury. He was among the team’s final cuts in August.

Woodside, 30, previously spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons and the Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders. The Bengals selected him in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but he never played a game for them, even after rejoining Cincinnati last season.

He played in 13 total career games, 11 with the Titans and two with the Falcons. He has never attempted a regular season pass, but has rushed 18 times for 13 yards.

As a collegian at Toledo, Woodside was named the Mid-American Conference’s MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2017.

The Steelers will now have one vacant slot on their 17-man practice squad.
