The Pittsburgh Steelers made their first quarterback roster decision on Friday, dropping Logan Woodside ahead of Tuesday’s cut-down day. He was one of 11 releases announced.
Woodside was added after Steelers rookie Will Howard broke a finger during a training camp practice. Howard was unable to take part in any preseason games for the team. Instead, Skylar Thompson was able to take a bulk of the Steelers’ snaps and Woodside got mop-up action.
With his limited share of time behind center, Woodside completed 8 of 15 passes for 83 yards and an interception.
Woodside previously spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons and the Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders. The Bengals selected him in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but he never played a game for them, even after rejoining Cincinnati last season.
As a collegian at Toledo, Woodside was named the Mid-American Conference’s MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 2017.
The Steelers will have to come to another signal-caller decision over the next few days. Thompson has a solid preseason, including his showing in the team’s 19-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on the road on Thursday night. Thompson completed 11 of 13 passes for 153 yards, a touchdown and an interception against in that one.
“You know what, that’s out of my control, that’s out of my hands,” Thompson said afterward about making the roster. “I have a lot of faith in whatever this next step is for me, it’s going to be a good step. I feel like I put my best foot forward, and ultimately, for me personally, that’s the best feeling. Whether it’s here, I hope it’s here, but whatever shakes out I have confidence that it’s going to work out for me.”
