The Pittsburgh Steelers have released rookie cornerback Daryl Porter Jr., the club announced on Monday. Porter was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad for the team’s Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions. That was the only game that he participated in this year. He played three special teams snaps and one on defense.
The Steelers signed veteran cornerback Tre Flowers to the active roster last week. They also elevated defensive back D’Shawn Jamison to the active roster from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, so Porter apparently fell out of favor.
Flowers, 30, took the roster spot vacated by wide receiver DK Metcalf, who is suspended for the final two games of the 2025 regular season.
The 6-foot-3, 203-pound cornerback has been with the practice squads of the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions this season, playing in two games with Detroit in October.
Porter, 23, originally signed with the Buffalo Bills as a UDFA after going undrafted at the 2025 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Bills on July 28. Porter began his collegiate career at West Virginia before transferring to Miami. He was a two-year starter for the Hurricanes and, at the two stops, registered 108 tackles, 18 passes defended and an interception.
Porter is the the son of former NFL safety Daryl Porter Sr., who had two stints with the Steelers amid a six-year NFL career. Porter Sr., who was the Steelers’ sixth-round pick out of Boston College in the 1997 NFL Draft, never played in a regular-season game with the team and was best-known for his three-year run with the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000.
In a corresponding move, the Steelers re-signed defensive tackle Kyler Buagh to the practice squad.
