The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived defensive tackle Brodric Martin, the team announced on Thursday.
Martin, 26, joined the team on Nov. 5 when the Steelers signed him from the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad. He appeared in one game for the Steelers, playing in 10 snaps of defense against the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 30.
Since then, even with the Steelers dealing with an injury to starting defensive tackle Derrick Harmon and three other backups, Martin had ceded playing time to former sixth-round draft pick Logan Lee over the past few weeks.
With both T.J. Watt (lung) and Nick Herbig (hamstring) missing practice time this week, the Steelers suddenly became far thinner at outside linebacker, and so Martin was waived to make room for the team’s signing of Jeremiah Moon.
The 6-foot-5, 326-pound Martin was a third-round pick by the Detroit Lions out of Western Kentucky in 2023. Martin played in five games and made one start over his first two seasons in the NFL with the Lions.
This year, Martin was waived by Detroit as part of final roster cuts on Aug. 27. Two days later, he was signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad.
A Tuscaloosa, Alabama native, Martin played three seasons at North Alabama before transferring to Western Kentucky for his final college season. At North Alabama, he played in all 25 games, starting 16 of them. He made 81 total tackles (37 solo, 44 assisted) with nine tackles for loss and two sacks, while also adding four pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
At Western Kentucky, Martin started all 14 games for the Hilltoppers and recorded 31 tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Martin also forced a fumble, hurried the quarterback seven times throughout the year and broke up two passes.
At the end of the year, he was named C-USA Honorable Mention and earned an invite to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl, where he was scouted by the Steelers.
