The Pittsburgh Steelers have released linebacker Kana’i Mauga from their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.

The Steelers signed Mauga on Dec. 3, and he was not elevated from the practice squad and did not appear in a game during his two weeks with the club.

The Steelers released him to make room for long snapper Cal Adomitis on the practice squad.

Before singing with the Steelers, Mauga most recently was with the Los Angeles Chargers, being released on Oct. 7 after signing with the club on May 12.

Originally an undrafted free agent out of USC for the Denver Broncos following the 2022 NFL Draft, Mauga moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad late in the season and was with Las Vegas until 2024. He appeared in five games for the Raiders in 2023 and 12 games in 2024. In his 17 career games, he’s recorded six total tackles. He was predominately a special teams player with the Raiders.

Mauga played all four years of his college ball at USC, starting 24 of the 43 games he appeared in. He had 207 tackles, 106 of them solo stops, 16.5 tackles for a loss, five sacks and three interceptions.

Mauga is a Waiʻanae, Hawaii native and attended Waianae High School. He was named the Hawaii Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, recording 52.5 total tackles and three defensive touchdowns. He ranked a four-star prospect and the best outside linebacker in the state.
