All signs point to Aaron Rodgers eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. But if the four-time league MVP spurns them, Carson Wentz could be a fallback option for the Black and Gold. It’s not ideal, but it could be the Steelers only option.
“I could see them signing a guy like Carson Wentz to be the backup.” former longtime Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette said on 93.7 The Fan. “Go with those three guys – (Will) Howard, (Mason) Rudolph, and Wentz and just muddle through this year. Regroup, and see what you can do next year for a quarterback.”
Wentz, 32, has thrown for 22,413 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions in his nine-year NFL career. After a promising start with the Philadelphia Eagles, he’s predominately been a backup quarterback in the NFL He hasn’t been a starter since 2021 with the Indianapolis Colts. In the last three years, he’s served as a backup QB for the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins could be another option, but that would require a trade.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said the Steelers have Cousins on their radar and would at least look into trading for the veteran QB.
“So Rodgers Plan A, Kirk Cousins could be a viable Plan B,” Fowler said on SportsCenter. “After making some calls today, I do believe he’s been on their radar. If something were to fall through with Rodgers, certainly they could reconvene, call Atlanta, and see if they could shake something out. But right now, Rodgers is their guy.”
Adam Schefter of ESPN said in April the Falcons would consider trading Cousins if the right deal is on the table.
“Publicly, the Falcons have said they’re not interested in trading quarterback Kirk Cousins but that they’d entertain offers if the right deal was on the table,” Schefter wrote. “Atlanta has asked for any acquiring team to pay $20 million of the $45 million worth of guarantees left on Cousins’ contract. To date, no has been willing to do that, and no team is expected to be willing to. But what happens this weekend — and which franchises come out of the draft with or without rookie quarterbacks –could influence how much guaranteed money a team might be willing to absorb on Cousins’ contract.”
Rodgers dropped a major hint he’s going to sign with the Steelers.
During a concert last Saturday in Austin, Texas with his friend and artist, Mike Stud, Rodgers held a Q&A with the crowd.
At one point during the session, a girl asked him if he would ever play for the Chicago Bears. Rodgers replied, “No. But I believe there is a team that might play in Chicago this year, a road trip to Chicago. I love Chicago, though, way more than they love me. It’s been a great relationship all one way.”
